SM-FINLAND (2015)
SM–Finland Publication
Supermarket Art Fair 2015, Stockholm, Sweden
SM–Finland was a collaborative publication produced for the Finnish presence at the Supermarket Art Fair 2015, uniting six artist-run galleries and associations: Titanik (Turku), Photographic Centre Peri (Turku), MUU Gallery (Helsinki), Galleria Sculptor (Helsinki), Galleria Becker (Jyväskylä), and Filmverkstaden (Vaasa). The project brought together Finland’s independent art spaces under one editorial umbrella, presenting their practices and perspectives to an international audience.
Conceived as both a collective statement and a curatorial map, the publication reflected the strength of Finland’s artist-run scene — its commitment to experimentation, collaboration, and cross-media approaches. Texts by contributors such as Leevi Haapala and Jonatan Habib Engqvist positioned the Finnish model within a wider Nordic and European dialogue on self-organisation, collaboration, and the evolving role of art institutions.
Through essays, visual documentation, and contextual framing, SM–Finland highlighted how artist-run organisations operate as laboratories for new ideas — expanding beyond exhibition-making into residencies, production, and experimental modes of cultural exchange.
The publication was designed and edited by Eliisa Suvanto and Ville Laaksonen, whose editorial direction sought to merge curatorial thinking with graphic form, creating a document that functioned simultaneously as a catalogue, a platform for discourse, and a proposal for future collaboration.
Supported by the participating organisations and printed by KMG Printworks, SM–Finland captured a moment of collective self-definition — a portrait of an art ecology grounded in cooperation, curiosity, and the spirit of becoming.
